I’ve been going through some images from earlier this year and came across this one taken at Blyde River Canyon that for some crazy reason I had not processed yet. I’ve travelled to many places in South Africa but the Blyde River Canyon continually takes my breath away more so than other places in SA I’ve been to.
The Blyde River Canyon (recently renamed the Motlatse) is the third deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the western U.S. and Namibia’s Fish River Canyon. By any measure it is one of the largest canyons on earth, unquestionably being the largest ‘green canyon’ due to its lush subtropical foliage. Books fail to describe the fresh mountain scenery and magnificent panoramic views. The Blyde River is dammed at the mouth of the Canyon to create the Blyde Dam at Swadini and parts of the dam can be seen in the photo below. I’ve included two other images of Blyde which were selected in the Fujifilm Getaway Wildlife and Environmental Awards 2010.

Well what can I say, my breath has been taken away. What a beautiful part of our country!
Thanks so much Elaine
Great photos of the canyon Mitch. I agree. It deffinitely is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I live less than an hour away from this part and I am ashamed of not visiting the canyon more often. Great work.
Thanks very much Des
