Magaliesburg Koesterfontein Landscape Sunset Quartzite Ridge

It would look better as an open-cast mine ... NOT !!! This is one of the striking quartzite ridges in the beautiful valley of Koesterfontein in Magaliesburg at Sunset. This valley along with several thousand hectares of neighbouring farmlands is facing a dire mining threat.

A picture speaks a thousand words as they say. This

is of the magnificent valley of Koesterfontein in Magaliesburg. This area is facing a dire mining threat and borders onto the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.

Recent figures released by the Landowners of Magaliesburg put the total area size of the 4 current prospecting (mining) applications combined as 45 sq km which is shocking to say the least.

The Koesterfontein Valley along with neighbouring Golden Valley form a substantial river catchment called the Blaauwbank which covers an area well over 100 sq km. This catchment leads into the Magalies River which then flows all the way to Hartebeespoort dam providing essential water for thousands of people along the way. All plans indicate, suggest and recommend open-cast mining as the way forward for this area.

made for a great foreground subject at sunset yesterday. But Now ask yourself, how can this view possibly be improved by a big gaping hole in the ground? Add your voice of opposition.

  1. These mining companies should feel ashamed of themselves when they look at a photo like this. What a beautiful area.
