This remains to be one of my most viewed images of all time. On this evening I set out to capture some lightning over the Voortrekker monument just outside the city of Pretoria (Tshwane) in South Africa.
Being permanently armed with camera’s I spotted some massive storms building to the South West of Pretoria just as I was driving home. I immediately detoured from my plans to go home and instead headed up to the monument in the hopes of these storms rolling into Pretoria towards the Voortrekker Monument.
Within an hour I was faced with very heavy winds which shook my vehicle in all directions but I decided to stay put and wait it out as by then I could clearly see this storm was heading directly for me and had the potential to produce some great lightning imagery.
Once the storm got close enough it started emitting some massive lightning strikes all around me. By this point it was already raining heavily and I was forced to shoot from inside my vehicle and eventually I captured this image with 3 massive lightning strikes surrounding the Voortrekker monument. The title “Monumental Chaos” immediately sprang to mind and I have stuck with it ever since.
This remains to be a very popular image on 500px and still one of my all time favorites.
This Lightning Photo “Monumental Chaos”, is available in print on a variety of Hahnemule Fine Art Papers, Epson Premium Papers and Canvas.
