After a cold and very dry winter it was a welcome sight for sore eyes to see stormy skies return to the Highveld in Gauteng, South Africa. Yesterday was the first day for us to see some major storm systems moving into the province and they of course did bring with them some dramatic skies.
I spent a good 2 hours watching the storm systems building, approaching then moving off which is no big surprise as we often play this cat and mouse game with each other. Luckily just as the sun was setting on the horizon another storm system moved right across in front of me and the sunlight pierced it’s way through and lit it all up like a christmas tree.
Unfortunately the first storms of summer are very unpredictable as to their electric capabilities and yesterday’s storms did not carry much punch with them, with just the occasional strike appearing from time to time and hardly one ever making ground contact. Either way I was happy to catch this one moment of a drama filled sky.
A dramatic sky illuminates as a summer thunderstorm passes across an open field as the sun is setting. (Print, stock and editorial enquiries may be directed to image@livingcanvas.co.za with REF: MM-S1512)

Stuning shot … The starkness of the field provides a powerful foreground for such a dramatic sky.
