One morning in the Maasai Mara our group decided to do a longer drive out to the the area where the well known Marsh pride reside. The Marsh pride is the undoubtedly the most famous and photographed pride in the world and were brought to fame from BBC’s television series The Big Cat Diary.
We initially ran into 3 younger males from the pride in a location close to the main pride. Our Masai guide told us these 3 males had been cast out from the pride but will later return to challenge the older males and eventually take control of the pride. As is often the case with lions, these three younger males were nicely hidden in long grass and sleeping. Within a few minutes of spotting these males, radio calls came in that the Marsh pride were having a scuffle with a buffalo in the marsh lands. Unfortunately by the time we got there the lion-buffalo scuffle was over without a kill and the lions had decided to pick a spot in the shade to laze around.
This pride had lions of all ages right down to cubs that were perhaps only 2-3 months old and cute as ever, more on that coming soon. This particular image I picked out today is of three of the sub-adults lying in the shade. This is the only frame out of 13 where all 3 looked towards me and luckily there was nothing obstructing the path between lens and lions. More images and stories about this pride coming soon.

Lovely shot Mitchell, brings back fond memories of the time I spent in Kenya with this very pride. Looking forward to more of the images. Regards, Ron.
Thanks very much Ron, wish we had spent more time with them but 7 days in Kenya, as you no doubt will confirm, goes by in the blink of an eye but I’ll be back
Thanks for stopping by.
I really love this image … it talks to me. The three princesses are sitting having their morning gossip session. I love the exressions on their faces that you captured. Each lion has distinctly different features and a different expression on her face. I love it … love … love it
Wonderful composition and capture Mitchell.
Thanks very much Johannes
