My Kingdom – Male Lion on the Plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya

by mitchellkrog on September 21, 2010

We followed this male lion for a short while one morning in the Maasai Mara. At one point he stopped looked straight at me and I grabbed this image of him with his entire kingdom stretching out behind him.

There’s often too much focus these days on extreme close ups of animals filling the entire frame, even I’m guilty of that, but I like to often try and capture the animal in his environment. Lions are often sleeping, lying in bushes or in some or other place where there is something obstructing the image so when I saw this scene I had a little jump of excitement as I clicked the shutter.

Really love all the space in this image. The mood, ambience and the lion’s sense of ownership are perfectly portrayed. Well done.
