Curious Cheetah Cub in the Maasai Mara

by mitchellkrog on September 21, 2010

On a late afternoon drive in the Maasai Mara we came across a female Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) with two cubs that were perhaps only 2-3 months in age. This youngster and his sibling were playing with each other for a good while and it was most entertaining the two cubs would also repeatedly team up and ambush their mother. There were moments I just watched them playing and forgot about the camera for a few seconds as we photographers tend to miss many memorable moments because our eyes are stuck behind a viewfinder.

The sky was heavily overcast on this day and shutter speeds were challenging for all and sundry but I always like a challenge. At the point this image was taken the cub stopped looked off into the distance and was nicely positioned away from his mother and sibling so that I could pick him out of the pack so to speak.
